New Scholarship Opportunities for iSchool Students

Scholarships can make it possible for students to earn a master’s degree, and a greater number of students at the San José State University School of Information will have that opportunity thanks to a donation given to fund 22 scholarships for students in special session.

All special session students actively enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science or Master of Archives and Records Administration degree program during the spring 2018 semester, who have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher, are eligible to apply for the scholarships—13 for new students and nine for current students —worth $1,422 each.

Scholarship committee chair Dr. Cheryl Stenstrom said the iSchool is delighted to be able to increase the number of scholarships available for both incoming and continuing students.

“We know that every bit helps for our students and that the recipients of these scholarships will have one less thing to worry about as they complete their studies at the iSchool. It’s exciting to be able to recognize the achievements and creativity of an even greater number of people this year,” Stenstrom said.

In keeping with innovations in the information profession, the scholarship application process underscores critical thinking and technology skills. Those interested in applying need to build a presentation that showcases their skills using tools such as Prezi or Powtoon and illustrates their commitment to impacting global and/or diverse communities and organizations, or showing leadership through initiatives related to libraries or records or information environments or external professional associations.

All scholarship applications will be judged based on creative presentation in the form of descriptive text, data points, visual elements, and the overall ability for applicants to convey their thoughts on one of the topics described above. The online scholarship application form will open on Oct. 1 and close Nov. 15. Scholarship recipients will be notified in mid-December.

The School of Information offers other scholarships to both new and matriculated students. Additional scholarships are also available from San José State University, professional associations, and other agencies.
