News

Ten students from the San José State University School of Information have been selected as 2009 Spectrum Scholars.

Congratulations to Reginald Allen, Rachel Arteaga, Kaela Cordova, Candelaria “Candy” Mendoza, Cristina Mitra, Mayumi Miyaoka, Jessica M. Navarro, Holly Nguyen, Sharon K. Tani, and Sofia Vazquez-Duran.

Established in 1997, the Spectrum Scholarship Program has become one of the most important drivers of diversity in the library profession. The program recruits LIS graduate students from five professionally under-represented groups: American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander. To date over 600 Spectrum Scholarships have been awarded. Spectrum provides a one-time non-renewable $5,000 tuition scholarship, over $1,500 in pre-professional development activities, and on-going leadership training and career placement services to each Spectrum recipient.

ALA will begin accepting ALA Scholarship applications for the 2010-2011 academic year, including Spectrum, via an online application that can be found at http://www.ala.org/advocacy/spectrum in October. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2010 and recipients will be notified in June 2010 of their selection.
