Social Science Data Services and Sources

Introduction to data librarianship focusing on library data services and sources for supporting numeric research in the social sciences. This course will look at the primary producers of statistics as well as essential sources for both aggregate data (statistics) and data files. Course topics include the data reference interview, developing an effective search strategy for locating statistics and data, instruction and statistical literacy, spatial data, collection development and management, and data archiving. Students will gain hands-on experience with numeric resources at all levels (i.e., published statistics, interactive databases, and data files). Local, national and international sources will be presented including the U.S. Census and related resources.

This course will be most useful to students interested in academic librarianship, government
information, or public service (reference).
