Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide (you) the motivated audience of students with the concepts, techniques and illustrations needed to develop first-rate nonprofit marketing skills. These skills will facilitate strategic planning that is cost effective and customer centered in its approach.

Course Objectives
Student Learning Outcomes
The course is designed to offer you the opportunity to:
- obtain an ingrained appreciation of the philosophy of marketing;
- build up a comprehensive and practical process for solving problems through systematic application of marketing principles to the library and information organization;
- develop an understanding of marketing components (marketing research, segmentation marketing mix strategy and marketing evaluation) which are relied upon to make effective marketing decisions; and
- acquire skills to analyze aspects of nonprofit marketing management in detail, outside the classroom.
LIBR 283 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- apply the fundamental principles of planning, management and marketing/advocacy;
- use service concepts, principles and techniques that facilitate information access, relevance, and accuracy for individuals or groups of users;
- demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for group work, collaborations and professional level presentations;
- evaluate programs and services on specified criteria.
In addition, this section supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- compare the environments and organizational settings in which library and information professionals practice;
- contribute to the cultural, economic, educational and social well-being of our communities.
Textbooks and Readings
Required Text
The required text for this course is Strategic Marketing for Non-Profit Organizations 6th edition, Prentice Hall (2003) by Alan Andreasen and Philip Kotler. Please order this book immediately upon reading this Green sheet—as assignments begin from the text the first week of class.

Course Requirements
Assignments
Assignments are all asynchronous and delivered in Blackboard.
Weekly assignments, will primarily be based upon the chapter and related readings. Assignments will include short answer responses to short answer and essay questions, discussion board asynchronous activities, and Web-based assignments.
The Web-based assignments are designed to facilitate participants understanding of using the Web as a resource to enhance knowledge of marketing concepts, and relevant marketing information.
The purpose of all assignments is to facilitate comprehension of the marketing concepts developed each week. The chapter and other readings (which can be accessed through the Course Library) must be read and reviewed first and referred to, before answering the assignment questions.
Team Operations
Your team will be ‘self-selected’ by your preference (at this point in your education!) for type of library or nonprofit agency (at least this semester!) A discussion board is set up for your selection of public; special; college/university; school media center; or nonprofit. You will place your name on one of these boards before Saturday, September 8. Your assignments will be team-based beginning with assignment 4 (due September 23.) If you prefer to work individually you must let me know by Saturday, September 8 via email. ALL discussion board posts are INDIVIDUAL.
Course Calendar
A course calendar will be posted under the syllabus section in Blackboard. All essay assignments will usually be due Sunday at midnight of any week, and discussion board posts Friday and Saturday. Instructor reserves the right to change assignments in advance and with notice.

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:
- C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
- B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
- A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.
Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0.
Late Work
Late work will be penalized, one letter grade per day without excuse.
Plagiarism
All assignments submitted must be your own work. Sources must be properly cited in papers as specified in class. The San Jose State University regulations governing plagiarism will be enforced.
