Refund Policy

Late Adds and Late Drops incur penalty fees. The amount of the penalty fee will depend on how far into the semester the student attempts to add or drop a course. The longer a student waits to drop a course, the greater the risk is that student will receive little or no refund. There are different refund guidelines depending on whether you are in Special Session or Regular Session. The Bursar handles regular session refund policy and refunds. The SJSU Professional and Continuing Education Department handles special session refunds.

Make sure to complete all registration activity during advanced registration.

Regular Session Refunds: See the SJSU refund policy. Contact the Bursar’s Office with refund or financial questions, at (408) 924-1601. The Bursar’s Office offers Live Chat hours on their website, M – F: 7:30 am – 4pm Pacific.

Special Session Refunds: Special session classes do not follow the same refund calendar as the regular session. Please follow the timeline below:

 • Students who officially drop the course by the third calendar day of the semester * will receive a 100% refund
 • On the 4th calendar day: 75% refund
 • On the 5th calendar day: 50% refund
 • On the 6th calendar day: 25% refund
 • Starting the 7th day: 0% refund.

Please note that even if the class has different start and end dates, all deadlines are calculated from the first day of the semester listed at the top of the schedules.

*For MS in Informatics classes, please note the semester dates for Session I and Session II are different. They are listed at the top of the iSchool Schedules for MS in Informatics.

Students are responsible for dropping their class officially. When students drop a class officially, their account will show class status as “Drop” or “W” grade. Failure to attend may not cause students to be dropped from a class automatically. Failure to drop a course officially generates a failing grade of “F” or Withdrawal Unauthorized (WU) and fees will be charged to the student’s account.

If you have dropped past the partial refund deadline and have extenuating circumstances to apply for refund, fill out the Professional and Continuing Education Department’s  Financial Petition. Send it as a pdf attachment to: pacefinancialpetition@sjsu.edu

School of Information Student Services staff does not have access to student financial data, such as your financial account history, payment deadlines or financial aid package.

If you have questions about how a late drop will impact your financial aid award, the Financial Aid Office holds Live Chat hours M – F: 12 – 4 pm Pacific.
