If you’ve always loved working with children, or have a special ability to relate to teens, then you’re probably considering Youth Services librarianship. The School of Information’s Youth Services Career Pathway can help you shape your MLIS degree to prepare you for working with young people. Following the Youth Services Career Pathway will prepare you for a career as a Children’s or Young Adult Librarian, as well as a career in Youth Outreach or Young Adult Reference Services. The iSchool’s career pathways serve as guidelines to choose your elective courses to fit your career goals.
Even during my undergraduate education (a few, ahem, years ago) I knew I wanted children. Once I had kids, I started reading to them—in utero, actually. I love books, I love children and I love reading to children. I figured that being a children’s librarian would be a good fit for me. I didn’t think much further than that.

Are you looking for a way to meet other students in our school’s online learning community? The American Library Association’s Student Chapter (ALASC) here at SJSU’s School of Information is an award-winning group that helps library and information science students connect with each other and participate in events that explore and celebrate students’ ideas.
Lori Harris, the chapter’s Program Outreach Coordinator says, “The ALASC is a way to participate in extracurricular but professionally-linked activities, get to know fellow students, experience different programs, and begin to understand the offerings of the ALA which can help students connect to like-minded professionals while in school and after they graduate.”

Once you begin your graduate program at SJSU SLIS you will most likely hear about the benefits of attending professional conferences. These are great opportunities to explore trends in the information profession, expand your professional network, and get new ideas regarding career options. Yet if you’re like most SLIS students, you may find it challenging to afford the costs of attending professional conferences, especially national conferences.
SLIS student Sharon Cheslow recently attended the California Academic and Research Libraries (CARL) annual conference in San Jose. She was thrilled to be able to attend the professional conference on a scholarship she received from CARL, which provided $500 towards her travel expenses and registration fees.
I chatted with Sharon recently, and thought I’d share some highlights from our conversation, so you can learn more about these types of scholarships. And hopefully Sharon’s story can inspire you to consider attending professional conferences while earning your graduate degree
How did you find out about the scholarship you received?

As a new student do you sometimes wonder if you will miss sitting in class and taking notes as your professor lectures up in front of the room? Do you think about how you will interact with your classmates who may be halfway around the world from you? While taking a totally online program has many advantages I have found that it can sometimes feel a little lonely sitting by myself with only the glow of the computer screen to keep me company.
And while I have plenty of interactions with my classmates and professors online through discussion boards, synchronous class sessions, emails and instant messaging, every once in a while I crave face-to-face interaction instead.
