MLIS 2018
Teen Services Librarian
Council Bluffs Public Library
Council Bluffs, IA USA

What I am doing now.

As a Teen Services Librarian, I supervise three Library Assistants. Program planning, budgets, reports, and collection management are the main focus of my position. Purchasing for the YA collection is new to me this year. Executing programs and budgeting the programs for the entire team, as well as managing staff members are skills that everyone in public librarianship should learn.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

I’ve learned a lot about Intellectual Freedom in my time at iSchool and I apply that knowledge to my job on a regular basis. Forecasting and Future Trend watching are skills I didn’t know I would need. Writing for strategic plans is a skill that has already served me well. Before starting my graduate program I thought of the process of getting my MLIS as a formality. Once I started learning I realized that there is so much to learn that even though I’m finished with my formal education I will always have more to learn.
