Residencies and Meetings

Note: The Gateway program is currently closed to new applicants for the coming year. We are updating our application procedures for the following year and will post new information on the How to Apply page as soon as it is available.

Residencies

All Gateway PhD students must attend the annual in-person residency, held in early August in San José, California. The summer residency serves as an orientation and working session for incoming students. Normally, sessions are held on topics such as academic expectations, developing relationships with supervisors and other faculty and students, and advancing research proposals and other student work. All Gateway PhD program faculty attend the summer residency.

In addition to the summer residency, students are also required to attend a virtual residency in late winter. These are the known dates (subject to change):

  • 2019 March 11-12 (virtual)
  • 2019 July 29 – August 2 (San José, California)

Monthly Zoom Virtual Meetings

Students must also attend monthly virtual meetings with all members of the Gateway cohort. The sessions are held via Zoom web conferencing and run about two hours. The monthly meetings fulfill a variety of purposes. While students have regular contact with their supervisory teams, the monthly cohort meetings allow for the development of the full research community. One of the strengths of the program is the access students have to the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the San José Gateway PhD program faculty. The monthly meetings are an opportunity for students to get feedback from and participate in discussions with their student and faculty colleagues.
