Many associations and organizations offer grants to encourage LIS students’ attendance at conferences and to support student research. Read about these opportunities below. Application requirements and deadlines vary. Since many of these grants are given annually, those with deadlines that have passed are included here for your future planning.

ARLIS/NA Conference Travel Awards

ARLIS/NA Art Libraries Society of North America Conference Travel Awards

ARLIS offers awards to encourage students considering a career in art librarianship or visual resources curatorship to participate in the activities of ARLIS/NA. Various awards are available each year, each giving $1000 towards travel expenses to conferences.

LACASIS Margaret McKinley Memorial Student Scholarship Essay Competition

The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIS) sponsors an Annual Student Scholarship Essay Competition. The scholarship winner receives reimbursement funding of up to $1,000 for registration, airfare, and hotel expenses to attend the ASIST Annual Meeting and a one-year membership in ASIST.

3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant

Attending an ALA annual conference can be a tremendous career boost to a new librarian. Opportunities abound for continuing education, information exchange, and networking. 3M Library Systems continues its generous support of the 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant program this year, by providing funding to cover the cost of registration fees, airfare, lodging and some incidental expenses for 3 individuals to attend the ALA Annual Conference. The award is open to individuals who are personal members of both ALA and the New Members Round Table (NMRT).

Justin Winsor Prize of the American Library Association
Library History Round Table

Guidelines:
The Justin Winsor Prize is presented by the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association each year to recognize the best essay written in English on library history, including the history of libraries, librarianship, and book culture.

FTRF Gordon F. Conable Conference Scholarship

The Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) offers an annual scholarship for library school students and new professionals to attend ALA’s Annual Conference. The goal of the Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship is to advance two principles that Gordon held dear: intellectual freedom and mentoring.

ALA Emerging Leaders Program Sponsorships

The American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leaders (EL) program is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations.

AALL LHRB Morris L. Cohen Essay Competition

The Legal History and Rare Books Section (LHRB) of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), in cooperation with Gale Cengage Learning, announces the annual Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition. The competition is named in honor of Morris L. Cohen, late Professor Emeritus of Law at Yale Law School. Professor Cohen’s scholarly work was in the fields of legal research, rare books, and historical bibliography.

Somerton Educational Grants

The Philanthropic Ventures Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of Somerton Educational Grants for Regular Session graduate students in SJSU’s School of Information. The Somerton grant program has been established in memory of Professor Wilbur Somerton and Irma Somerton.

Grants of up to $500 will be awarded to help with expenses for critical necessities which do not fall under other student aid programs. Examples include computer software, small educational items, eye glasses, transportation from home to school, and limited dental care.
