MacOS 11 (Big Sur) Compatibility

1.  Web Browsers:   

a.  Google Chrome:   Please update to Chrome version 87 or later in order to get full support for Big Sur.

b.  Mozilla Firefox:  Please update to Firefox version 83 or later in order to get full support for Big Sur.

c.  Safari:   Big Sur ships with the most current version of Safari.

2.  Google Apps:   As long as you update to the above supported browser versions, there should be no compatibility issues.

3.  Canvas:   As long as you keep your Web browser current (see above for browser versions that are compatible with Big Sur), you should not have any issues.   Canvas supports the current and first previous major releases of the following browsers:   Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Respondus Lockdown Browser

4.  Zoom:  Zoom is working to resolve issues with Big Sur.   Please be sure install the December 7th 2020 update for Zoom once it is released.   More information is available here.  

5.  Microsoft Office for Mac:    

a.   Office 2019 and Office 365:   Big Sur is supported as of the November 2020 release (build 16.43).   Please be sure to update your apps to the most current release.   More information is available here

b.  Office 2016 for Mac:    Microsoft discontinued all support for Office 2016 for Mac as of October 2020.   Therefore, the School of Information can no longer support Office 2016 for Mac.   Note that iSchool users have free access to Office 2019 for Mac.  

6.  MySJSU:  Be sure to update to one of the above supported browser versions. 

7.  Adobe Creative Cloud:  Please note that there are some compatibility issues and version restrictions.   If you rely heavily on Adobe apps, you may want to wait until the current issues are resolved.   Here is some additional information:

a.  Adobe Acrobat:   See the following article for compatibility and known issues.

b.  Photoshop:   See the following article for compatibility and known issues.

c.  Other Adobe apps:    See the following article for additional information.   Note that Adobe is still testing their apps for compatibility issues.

8.  SPSS Statistics:   SPSS 27, 26 & 25 are compatible but with known issues and required workarounds.   Please see the following article for more information.

9.   Qualtrics:  Be sure to update to one of the above supported browser versions.  More information on Qualtrics browser compatibility is available here.

10.  VoiceThread:   Update to the most current version of Chrome or Firefox.   According to the vendor, Safari is not fully compatible with VoiceThread.   See the following article for more information.

11.  Panopto:  For viewing lectures, please make sure you have upgraded to the most current version of Chrome, Firefox or Safari.  Currently, Panopto Recorder (which is only used by faculty members) is not compatible with Big Sur, however the company will be releasing the Panopto Recorder 9.1 update soon to address compatibility issues.

12.  WebData Pro:   Please update to the most current version of Chrome or Firefox.  The version of Safari that ships with Big Sur should be compatible with WebData Pro.

13.  Camtasia:    Versions 2019.0.9 or 2020.0.10 or later are compatible with Big Sur, with a known issue and a workaround related to the audio capture component.

14.  SnagIt:   Versions 2019.1.10 or 2020.2.2 or 2021.0.2 or later are compatible with Big Sur, with a known issue and workaround related to crashing and also audio capture.

15.  DocuSign:  Update to the most current version of Chrome or Firefox.   The version of Safari that ships with Big Sur should be compatible with DocuSign.

16.  Sophos:  Sophos Home Premium for Mac version 10.0.1a1 (released December 1st 2020) is compatible with Big Sur, with some necessary workaround tasks, and some feature limitations.   An additional update will be released in December 2020 to address these issues.   Please monitor the following article for workaround steps and additional information.

17.  WordPress:   Follow the Web browser advice given above and report any issues to Abigail Laufer.

18.  Additional Online Services:

  a. RDA Toolkit:   Follow the Web browser advice given above and report any issues to Abigail Laufer.

  b. Classification Web:   Follow the Web browser advice given above and report any issues to Abigail Laufer.

  c. WebDewey:  Follow the Web browser advice given above and report any issues to Abigail Laufer.

  d. InfoSec Labs:   Follow the Web browser advice given above and report any issues to Abigail Laufer.

  c. SecondLife:  Unofficial reports state that the Second Life viewer application runs fine under Big Sur, both on Intel Macs and M1 Macs.   Note that OpenGL (which Second Life utilizes heavily) is “deprecated” in Big Sur, but is still available.   It is possible that OpenGL will be removed in the next release of MacOS.
