Scholarships for New Students

The SJSU School of Information is pleased to offer scholarships for new students during the first semester they are enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science, Master of Archives and Records Administration, Master of Science in Informatics program, or Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Data Analytics.

  • Newly admitted students in Regular Session or Special Session may apply for the Director’s Scholarship for Excellence valued at $3,250 each. This scholarship is available to only master’s degree students.
  • Newly admitted students in Special Session may apply for the Special Session Scholarships valued at $3,250 each. This scholarship is available to master’s degree and bachelor’s degree students.

Director’s Scholarship for Excellence

The Director’s Scholarship for Excellence recognizes the potential of new students to take a leading role in shaping their profession. Through a creative application process, new students have the opportunity to really demonstrate their passion for the information career field. Three incoming students will be awarded the Director’s Scholarship for Excellence for fall 2024 to assist them as they embark on their master’s degree journey. This scholarship is valued at $3,250 each.

Eligibility

All new students who have been admitted or are pending admission to the MLIS, MARA, or Informatics program for fall 2024 and have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.2 are eligible to apply for a Director’s Scholarship for Excellence. A copy of your transcript showing your GPA is required.

The scholarship is open to both Regular Session and Special Session students.

Application Process

Create an infographic/digital poster that highlights your desired career path. Use your creativity and research skills to share (1) your thoughts on what kinds of issues will be important to you in that career, and (2) what drew you to the profession. Be sure to cite your references/sources if using third party information/data.

You may use any tool to create the infographic. A list of free infographic tools can be found here: https://www.creativebloq.com/infographic/tools-2131971. Accepted file formats include PDF and jpeg.

Entries will be judged based on creative presentation of your information in the form of descriptive text, data points, photos/images/graphics, and your overall ability to tell your story.

Once you have created your infographic, complete the online scholarship application form (form will be open through May 1, 2024) and upload the PDF or jpeg. The infographic scholarship application will not be reviewed until after the application deadline. 

Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for a Director’s Scholarship for Excellence is May 1, 2024. Scholarships will only be awarded to students who are admitted to the MLIS, MARA or Informatics program.

The school’s scholarship committee will review all submissions, select recipients, and notify recipients by early June 2024.

Receiving Scholarship Funds

Scholarship funds are applied directly to successful applicants’ tuition for the following term. Students must be admitted and enrolled in at least three course credits, in order to be eligible to receive scholarship funds.

Special Session Scholarships

New students in Special Session who are starting the MLIS, MARA or Informatics graduate degree program or the BS in Information Science and Data Analytics undergraduate major in fall 2024 are encouraged to apply for the Special Session Scholarships valued at $3,250 each.

Eligibility

All new Special Session students who have been admitted or are pending admission to the MLIS, MARA or Informatics graduate degree program for fall 2024 and have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.2 are eligible to apply for a Special Session Scholarship. A copy of your transcript showing your GPA is required.

All new Special Session students admitted to the BS in Information Science and Data Analytics undergraduate major for fall 2024 and have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 are eligible to apply for a Special Session Scholarship. A copy of your transcript showing your GPA is required.

Application Process

Using Prezi or Powtoon or any similar tools (such as emaze), creatively build a presentation that showcases your skills (e.g., technology skills, organization skills, research skills, and other skills you may have), and illustrates your commitment to one of the following themes:

  • impacting global and/or diverse communities and organizations
  • showing leadership through initiatives related to libraries or records or information environments or external professional associations
  • designing user friendly web interfaces
  • presenting data sets in an understandable way

Entries will be judged by the School of Information Scholarship Committee based on creative presentation in the form of descriptive text, data points, visual elements, and your overall ability to convey your thoughts on one of the topics described above. Once you have created your presentation, complete the online scholarship application form (form will be open from January 4 through May 1, 2024). The scholarship applications will not be reviewed until after the application deadline.

The deadline to apply for a Special Session Scholarship is May 1, 2024. Scholarships will only be awarded to new students enrolled in the MLIS, MARA or Informatics graduate degree program or the BS in Information Science and Data Analytics major for fall 2024.

The scholarship committee members will review all submissions, select recipients, and notify recipients by early June 2024.

Receiving Scholarship Funds

Scholarship funds will be dispersed to the student’s account for the following term after all eligibility and gratitude requirements are met. Students must be actively enrolled to receive scholarship funds. Students will be informed of award status via their SJSU email. Please keep an eye on your spam folder to ensure you do not miss notifications.
