Course Load

The Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree program at the San José State University (SJSU) School of Information requires the completion of 43 units comprising 15 total courses (six required courses and nine electives). The majority of courses offered in our fully online MLIS program are three units, with some courses at one and two units.

Note: The requirement of 43 units applies to all students entering in fall 2008 and after. Students already enrolled in the MLIS program prior to fall 2008 are required to complete 42 units. They are not required to take INFO 203.

MLIS students can expect to spend at least three hours outside of “class” per every course hour. The graduate-level coursework is difficult. Students should carefully consider the program’s rigor and their other responsibilities outside of school, such as work and family obligations, when deciding on how many classes to take each semester. Dropping classes after the deadlines early in the semester can be problematic and expensive. We recommend that students be conservative in the number of classes they take each semester.

Students can attend the MLIS program full time or part time and have up to seven years to finish their studies. San José State University does not apply credits earned more than seven years before graduation toward a master's degree.

Full-time students can earn their Master’s degree in Library and Information Science in as quickly as 4 semesters. MLIS courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters and over the summer break. Here are a few examples of how full-time students can fast-track the fully online MLIS program at the SJSU iSchool.
