SJSU’s Teacher Librarian program, exclusively online, approved by National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and offers dual degree option

Teacher Librarian Program

The fully online Teacher Librarian program at the San José State University (SJSU) School of Information (iSchool) will prepare you for the next step in your teaching career as a library media specialist.

Specialized Skills for K-12 Careers

Graduates of the Teacher Librarian program at the SJSU School of Information will emerge with a specialization in the functions and skills necessary for employment in K–12 schools including collaboration, technology leadership, and program administration.

As a teacher librarian – also referred to as a school media specialist – you’ll be a teacher, a librarian, and an instructional partner.

Credential + MLIS Degree

Students in our Teacher Librarian program can pursue both their teacher librarian credential and Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree! Teacher librarianship is one of the exciting career pathways students can follow within our MLIS program, which is fully accredited by the American Library Association.

Approved Coursework

The Teacher Librarian program coursework is approved by the Council for Accreditation for Educator Preparation (CAEP) and meets the requirements for the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential.

Qualifying for the Program

Candidates must have a Clear Professional Teaching Credential before applying for the Teacher Librarian Services Credential. Students are not eligible for the certification without a Clear Professional Credential even if they have completed Teacher Librarian program coursework.

If you are interested in a Teacher Librarian Services Credential from a state other than California, please check with that state's Department of Education for the its requirements before undertaking this program. It is important to check with your home state to determine if it only requires approved coursework or if you are expected to meet all of the requirements for a California Teacher Librarianship certificate.

A sample question might be, "Do I have to complete a program making me eligible for a endorsement in the home institution state or is coursework sufficient?" If the answer is that you need to meet all of the requirements for a California Teacher Librarian certificate, you will need the following:

  • A Valid California Professional Clear Credential
  • Basic Skill Authorization
  • English Language Learner Authorization

Please see the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing for more information.
