MLIS 2015
Digital Asset Management Librarian
Caterpillar
Peoria, IL USA

What I am doing now.

Content management for marketing assets in OpenText Media Manager. New user training, metadata governance, program development, SQL monthly analytics, archiving, cat-wrangling.

Although I work for Caterpillar, located in Peoria, IL, I actually work remotely from my home in Mountain View, CA. I fly to Peoria two to three times a year and spend a week working with the team. They were looking for someone with the MLIS degree, and having someone on-site was secondary to finding the right fit. I’m very grateful for this accommodation.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

Metadata and taxonomy application, schema analysis, SQL queries, team collaboration, writing documentation, teaching, fact-finding, trouble-shooting.

I’m not sure I was necessarily surprised by the skills, knowledge, and experience I use, but it is gratifying finally being in a position where I can draw upon the experiences I had prior to starting the iSchool program and blending them into the education I received. I was hired specifically because of my degree combined with my technical and corporate experience.

Thanks to my iSchool education, I have the big-picture understanding of our digital asset management system and how it should be implemented. I can speak knowledgeably about the importance of metadata application to new users.
