Kim Dority [ send message ]
As the career advisor to the School of Information at San José State University, Kim Dority focuses on highlighting the diversity of career opportunities available to iSchool students and sharing the strategies necessary to find or create those opportunities. Her responsibilities for the iSchool include expanding the career information available throughout the website’s Career Development section, managing the iSchool’s career-focused webcasts and podcasts, overseeing the annual MLIS at Work: A Snapshot of Job Postings report, and working directly with students on career questions or issues.
Dority is available via email and phone to answer questions, critique cover letters and resumes, discuss interview preparation, or assist with LIS career exploration or job searching questions.
Biographical Sketch
Kim Dority is the founder and president of Dority & Associates, an information strategy and content development company focusing on researching and writing print and online content to help advance client goals. During her career, she has worked in academia, publishing, telecommunications, and the library fields, in for-profit and nonprofit settings, for both established companies and start-ups.
Dority created and teaches a course on alternative LIS career paths in the University of Denver’s LIS graduate program, and is the author of two books on LIS careers, including Rethinking Information Work: A Career Guide for Librarians and Other Information Professionals, 2d ed (2016) and LIS Career Sourcebook: Managing and Maximizing Every Step of Your Career (2012), both published by Libraries Unlimited. In addition, Dority created and manages the LinkedIn “LIS Career Options” group, which now includes nearly 13,000 members from over 80 different countries. She blogs on a somewhat regular schedule at Infonista.com, and received SLA’s Rose L. Vormelker Award (“the Rosie”), which honors a commitment to teaching and professional development, in April 2017.
Since graduating with her MLS from the University of Denver, Dority has applied her LIS skills in as many ways as she can think of while helping others, especially students, do the same. She lives in Colorado where, in a triumph of optimism over reality, she continues to root for the hometown Rockies baseball team every summer.
