Master of Archives and Records Administration
42 Units
The Master of Archives and Records Administration degree program at the San José State University School of Information prepares students for careers in the rapidly expanding fields of records management, corporate archives and information governance.
Management and Leadership
MARA students are trained to be managerial-level leaders within their organizations and the profession. In addition to required course work on management and leadership, students develop their leadership skills through professional experiences, such as an internship or Organizational Consulting Project. They also receive a one-year paid membership to ASIS&T, NAGARA, or SAA, and have the opportunity to take on a number of roles in these organizations that allow them to develop their skills, deepen their connections to the field, and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Advanced Technology
Students learn to use and critically appraise diverse technologies, from digital content management systems, trusted digital repositories, and data governance systems. They engage with cutting-edge technology and gain hands-on skills to use the technology from an archival perspective, with course work available on everything from AI ethics to digital forensics. Graduates of the MARA online degree program will be among the few information professionals specifically trained to manage the irreplaceable, yet highly vulnerable digital materials now produced by corporate, government, and nonprofit institutions.
“Before I started the program, I was expecting grad school to be the most challenging thing in the world and just for every class to be grueling… and in reality, it is a challenge but the professors are all intelligent and willing to help you and are really thorough. So there’s no need to be anxious or worried about succeeding because I feel like with the help available to me personally, it would be impossible for me to not succeed in this program.” – Sara Morrison, ‘23 MARA
