Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Certificate
Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Certificate — Starting Fall 2025
9 Units
The SJSU School of Information is launching a new Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Certificate program in fall 2025. The certificate program takes a holistic approach to AI and is aimed at giving SJSU Regular Session undergraduate students in any discipline a solid grounding in AI that will allow them to productively and responsibly incorporate AI in diverse professions and businesses.

AI is Everywhere
The Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Certificate program offers students a fundamental overview of AI technologies, focusing on practical applications, ethics and governance, and policy. The certificate program is designed to equip students with the skills to critically assess AI’s societal implications while providing them with hands-on experience in the tools and techniques essential to human-centered AI development.
Students will gain an understanding of:
- The fundamentals of artificial intelligence (e.g., types, approaches, methods, and architectures);
- The social, ethical, and normative impacts and risks of AI;
- Human-centered approaches to the design and implementation of AI systems that emphasize responsibility, safety, and the beneficial interaction between humans (as knowledge workers, end users, citizens) and AI agents.
Hybrid Delivery
Students in this undergraduate certificate program benefit from both online and in-person learning opportunities. The hybrid delivery format offers both the convenience and flexibility of online learning enhanced by network building and hands-on applications in the Silicon Valley community.
Enrollment
This certificate program is open to SJSU undergraduate students in Regular Session only.

Dr. Grace Babalola
Course Taught: ISDA 080
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Grace Babalola is a human-centered
AI researcher and data scientist passionate about bridging
cutting-edge research with real-world impact. She completed her
Ph.D. in Industrial & Systems Engineering with a focus on Human
Factor Engineering and Data Science at Binghamton University. Her
research explores how AI technologies can enhance healthcare
decision-making while respecting human workflows and cognitive
processes. With industry experience at Microsoft, Amazon, and
Excellus BCBS, Dr. Babalola has developed LLM-powered knowledge
systems and NLP solutions that prioritize user needs and ethical
considerations. Her work includes designing an AI-powered
clinical decision support tool that reduces decision-making time
while maintaining a human-centered approach. Dr. Babalola’s
scholarship appears in publications including Frontiers in
Robotics and AI and the CHI Conference on Human Factors in
Computing Systems proceedings. She brings to SJSU a unique
interdisciplinary perspective combining human factors
engineering, data science, and AI ethics, preparing students to
implement AI responsibly across diverse domains. A certified
Scrum Master and Product Owner, Dr. Babalola actively contributes
to professional organizations, including the Human Factors and
Ergonomics Society and the Institute for Operations Research and
Management Sciences.
Dr. Theresa Huff
Course Taught: ISDA 180
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Theresa Huff is an educator,
researcher, and instructional designer whose work bridges
human-centered design, artificial intelligence, and ethical
digital learning practices. She holds a doctorate in Educational
Leadership – Instructional Design and Technology from Idaho State
University and has over 20 years of teaching experience,
including graduate-level instruction in learning theories and
AI-integrated design. As an OER Instructional Designer at Loyola
Marymount University, she supports faculty in creating open,
accessible, and inclusive learning materials across disciplines.
Her research explores responsible AI use in education, learner
well-being, and the affective dimensions of online engagement.
She developed the CRAFT model, a reflective framework introduced
through her open textbook co-created with graduate students,
which helps learners use AI tools transparently, verify accuracy,
and critically examine ethical implications. Her dissertation on
multimedia design and learner anxiety was awarded the 2024–2025
Kole-McGuffey Prize for Excellence in Educational Research. Dr.
Huff is passionate about preparing students to critically
evaluate human-AI interactions with an emphasis on ethics,
inclusion, and learner-centered design.
Dr. Ingrid Steinberg
Course Taught: ISDA 081
Educational Achievements
Ingrid Steinberg has a PhD in Philosophy
(Ethics) from UCLA, a Master’s in Philosophy (Aesthetics,
Philosophy of Language, and Metaphysics) from University College
of London (UK) and a BA (Honors) in English from “Wits”
University (South Africa). Dr. Steinberg is currently in the
later stages of completing an MLIS degree at SJSU. Dr.
Steinberg’s PhD research centered around questions of personal
autonomy as it related human and non-human beings who are
regarded as being “on the edges” of recognition as persons for
purposes of respecting their autonomy. She has a longstanding
interest in various areas of applied ethics, including children’s
ethics, animal rights, environmental ethics, and most recently,
the ethics of AI. Dr. Steinberg has worked and studied globally.
She taught Philosophy and Interdisciplinary courses to freshmen
and upper division undergraduate students at UCLA, as a lecturer,
teaching associate, and teaching assistant. Dr. Steinberg has
also had a varied career the private and non-profit sectors. She
co-founded and led a community non-profit, Resilient Palisades,
that brought together neighbors from Pacific Palisades, CA to
respond to the climate crisis. For several years she was a
Marketing and Social Research director, project manager, and
analyst for both private sector and non-profit companies in the
US, UK, and South Africa. Dr. Steinberg is a lifelong learner. In
addition to pursuing her MLIS degree, she is currently studying
Spanish and learning to play the piano, as well as doing a deep
dive into the philosophy of Spinoza.
