What I am doing now.

I do story times for preschool kids. I supervise programs that are for kids, teenagers and adults. I conduct teen advisory board meetings and help the teens create programs for kids and teens. I help my teens to collect donations for charities. I create flyers for programs and print them for in house use and send them by email to schools for promotion. I enter program information into the library’s online calendar.

I help select and buy new materials for my library branch. I schedule performers for the summer reading program. I do in branch duties such as shelving and shelf-reading. I also help patrons to use the online catalog and find materials on the shelf or put them on hold or request them through inter-library loan. I attend youth meetings and promote library system wide events such as reading challenges.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

Communicating well with people and practicing good customer service at the information desk and while speaking with patrons on the telephone. I’ve learned how to smile and be very courteous with kids and parents at story times. I’ve also learned to be perceptive about which books or activities work well with kids or not. I’ve learned to be patient with coworkers and to be a mediator when there is conflict between my coworkers. I’ve also learned to tolerate difficulties, be optimistic and to be assertive about my view on things.
