What I am doing now.
My main role is ensuring that online and distance students get access to the same high-quality library services and resources that traditional students do. For example, I help make sure that distance students have access to online reference service, online resources on par with those in the physical library, and research instruction. I develop asynchronous video tutorials and instructional videos, make contacts on campus with faculty in the distance programs, and work on enhancing the library’s website to improve the user experience for distance education students. I also provide reference and instruction services to on-campus students.
What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?
Every day, I use concepts I learned in my courses in information literacy instruction and web usability. I’ve also found that my time spent as a distance education student at SLIS has really informed my practice now as a librarian — I understand what my students are going through and can anticipate their needs based on my own experiences.
