What I am doing now.
My current responsibilities include reference work, library instruction, and collection development. As a staff, we are very team-based, so we do everything collaboratively. Most of the time, I am at our Service Desk which is a combination circulation/reference desk. At the beginning of each quarter, we are flooded with requests for library (instruction) presentations thanks to our supportive faculty. We are lucky to see the students many times over a two- or four-year period to help them hone their information literacy skills.
What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?
The MLIS program was wonderful and completely transformed how I approach my work in the library. (I had been a Library Assistant for several years before I started the program.) I especially enjoyed (and still apply what I learned in) the Reference classes with Todd Gilman, Collection Development with Arglenda Friday, Instructional Strategies with David Loertscher, and the Management class (Information Professions) taught by Bill Fisher.
