What I am doing now.

I work with youth in the inner city, providing reference services, programming, and performing outreach to the community about what the public library offers. I have integrated social media into the outreach aspect of Youth Services and am also creating a strong relationship with the local schools. Most importantly, I am building rapport and trust with the local youth and their families, and establishing the library as a place for community gathering; a beacon in an underserved neighborhood.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

I learned how to assess the community one is working in, what the needs are, and how to best reach non-users. I am also learning how to survey the library’s collection to reflect the needs of our patrons.
