The Difference Between Management & Leadership

On Thursday evening from 6:00-6:30 PM Pacific, iSchool Connext is presenting an intriguingly titled program: The Difference Between Management and Leadership. Karlene Clark, an iSchool student, Coordinator of Circulation Services and Student Employees at Chester Fritz Library, and iSchool Connext secretary, will be the speaker.

Karlene will draw from her experience to help us understand how management and leadership are actually separate skills. “She will discuss the differences and strengths of managers and leaders, explaining why it is a myth that everyone can be a leader and why both are needed within organizations – especially libraries” (source). Besides professional development, this event sounds like it could tie in well with INFO 204: Information Professions.

This is also a good opportunity to get to know iSchool Connext a bit. This group “fosters connections between current and former students of the SJSU iSchool program through our communications, events, and programs. If you are a SJSU iSchool alumnus or current student, you are automatically welcomed as a member of Connext” (source). In other words, this is a way for current and former students to network with and learn from each other.

The other great thing about Connext is its website’s handy Career Guide, which links to lots of resources (like job sites and salary negotiation help) and offers interview advice. Of course, I’m partial to the broad and deep Career Development site developed by the iSchool, but when I’m nervous pre-interview or searching for job postings, the more help the better!

If you’re as curious about iSchool Connext and the differences between management and leadership as I am, you can attend this free program via Collaborate.
