Handshake: SJSU’s New Jobs Database

Career Blog

If you are not brand new to the iSchool, you may remember SpartaJobs, SJSU’s job database. SpartaJobs is dead; long live Handshake! Handshake is the name of the new database, and it couldn’t be easier to start using. Current students automatically have access, and recent alumni retain access for one year post-graduation.

All you need to start searching for jobs is your SJSUOne ID and password (the same info you use to sign into Canvas and MySJSU). The first time you log in, Handshake will lead you through the steps to set up your profile, like adding geographical constraints, work experience, and skills. You can always add to or edit your profile later.

Handshake will suggest some jobs to you, and you can, of course, filter results and run your own searches. SJSU has put together a Getting Started Guide and a collection of useful tips and tutorials to help you get the most out of Handshake (and get a job!). The always delightful Jill Klees has also offered her help if you get stuck or have questions. You can email her at jill.klees@sjsu.edu.

Handshake will automatically display your search results with postings for “Library Sciences Majors” near the top (when sorted by relevancy), but keep in mind your dream employer may not know they want a librarian. For example, when I entered “researcher” as a keyword, I saw results that sound like they could be a good fit for iSchool students.

I also found interesting results using these search terms:

  • instructional design
  • competitive intelligence
  • research analyst
  • archivist
  • data management
  • metadata
  • curator

You can filter job listings by job type, industry, location, and whether remote workers are allowed, for example. When you’re ready, you can apply right from the job posting. Handshake will use your profile information and give you the opportunity to upload (or choose from files you’ve previously added) a resume, cover letter, transcript, and more.

Just as a financial advisor would tell you to diversify your investments and a nutritionist would tell you to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, looking for jobs in multiple places (job boards, company websites, LinkedIn, Handshake) will give you the broadest selection to choose from. So don’t be shy – check out Handshake, and maybe you’ll find your dream job!
