Have you thought about a LIS career that’s NOT in a library? If so, or if your curiosity is piqued, join the Career Development team on Wednesday, October 25 at 5:30pm Pacific for LIS Jobs in Pharma: What They Are, Where They Are, and How to Land One. Mindy Beattie, Associate Director of Library & Information Sciences at Gilead Sciences, will present via Collaborate, and it sounds both interesting and informative.

I didn’t know this, but you don’t have to have a STEM background to land jobs in the pharmaceutical industry. In fact, pharma companies are looking for a range of LIS skills, including ones you can master during your iSchool tenure. Of course, if you don’t know how the pharmaceutical industry works or what skills those are, it’s hard to map out a class schedule that makes sense. But a solution awaits!

Mindy will share what the pharma industry looks like, various roles for information professionals in pharma organizations, and in-demand skills. She will also share tips for students interested in getting started in an LIS pharma career. I’ve actually met Mindy in-person, and she’s smart and engaging. I have no doubt she’ll give a great presentation.

This is a niche I haven’t read a lot about. There are a couple Special Libraries Association (SLA) divisions (Biomedical & Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences) and a few sections in the Medical Library Association that should be good resources. But this webcast is a fantastic opportunity to talk to a real, live, human being. Mindy brings with her a wealth of knowledge – before joining Gilead, she managed teams at two pharmaceutical companies and a chemical company.
