Stacey Nordlund Promotes Student Publishing Opportunities as Editor-in-Chief of SLIS Student Research Journal
“I’m thrilled to be taking on a more active role in developing journal operations and focusing on long-term planning,” said Nordlund, who previously served as SRJ’s managing editor. “I also find both the editing process and the opportunity to communicate directly with authors about their work to be very rewarding.”
Nordlund is working closely with a team of eight graduate student editors to develop bi-annual issues of SRJ, the first student-governed scholarly journal at SJSU. SRJ (pronounced “surge”) is a peer-reviewed open access publication that encourages student scholarship in the fields of library and information science, archives and records management, and museum studies. SRJ welcomes submissions from SJSU SLIS students and all LIS graduate schools.
Since her appointment as Editor-in-Chief in January 2012, Nordlund has produced an introductory screencast and video to raise awareness of the Journal in the professional LIS community. She is also focusing on providing support and encouragement to authors through a detailed review of their work. “My goal is to help students develop their manuscripts for publication, whether that’s with SRJ or with another journal,” said Nordlund, who completes the preliminary editorial review for every manuscript that is submitted.
Nordlund first joined the SRJ editorial team in August 2011 as the Journal’s managing editor. “I was looking for opportunities to develop my leadership skills and to be more involved in the SLIS community,” she said. As managing editor she was responsible for overseeing the Journal’s double-blind peer review process and for compiling review reports from multiple editors to send to each author.
A resident of Toronto, Canada, Nordlund coordinates SRJ operations using virtual communication tools and the web-based publishing platform ScholarWorks. She juggles her work as Editor-in-Chief with her family responsibilities, coursework, and part-time position at the Toronto Public Library, where she’s worked for the past 13 years.
Nordlund decided to earn her MLIS from the iSchool after hearing a presentation by former Director Dr. Ken Haycock at an Ontario Library Association event. “I was really drawn to the flexibility of the program; I loved the distance learning approach and the innovative ways technology is used to bring students and instructors together from all over the world,” she said.
Nordlund, who enrolled at SJSU School of Information in fall 2009, is working virtually as an Embedded Librarian Intern at SJSU’s King Library during the spring 2012 semester. She also serves as the editor for the SLIS Descriptor, a publication of the SJSU SLIS American Library Association Student Chapter (ALASC). Nordlund plans to graduate in May 2012.
