Caste Discrimination: An Introduction for Librarians
Faculty Presentation
Join this webinar jointly organised by IFLA’s Library Services
for Multicultural Populations (MCULTP) Section and the Research
and Action Committee of IFLA Member, the Free Libraries Network,
India, in order to learn about the nature and impact of caste
discrimination, and how it can manifest itself in libraries.
While perhaps less widely known for many than other forms of
discrimination, differentiating colleagues and users by caste can
have a significant negative impact on the achievement of library
missions.
This is an international issue, not just present in countries
with a tradition of caste systems, but often also exported
through diasporas. As such, it is a topic that librarians around
the world are interested in exploring, in order to help identify
when it may be happening and to reflect on how to respond.
The session will be moderated by MCULTP Chair Leili
Seifi, and we will be joined by:
Dr Chinnaiah Jangam, Associate Professor in the Department of
History, Carleton University, Canada
Dr Michele AL Villagran, Associate Professor, San José State
University School of Information, San Jose, California, United
States
Mausam Kumari, Library Movement Activist and Director of The
Community Library Project, Delhi NCR, India
