Seeking Immortality: Preserving the Language and Cultural Heritage of the Northern Cheyenne in Virtual Reality
Faculty Presentation
Funded by a $150,000 IMLS Native American Enhancement grant, the Northern Cheyenne Tribe has partnered with the Woodenlegs Tribal Library, the SJSU iSchool, and the SJSU MLK, Jr. Library’s KLEVR Lab to pilot test preserving their language and cultural artifacts using state of the art recording technology and delivering it in virtual reality. Our presentation will detail the process used to identify user priorities, digitization process, user testing, and draft version of preserved language and cultural artifacts in virtual reality. A demonstration of different types of technology will occur plus a discussion around information privacy, meta data, and ensuring that the information is archived and preserved the way the Northern Cheyenne people wish it to be
