Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Getting the Most Out of your Group Assignments
8/10/2018; 6:00 PM (PDT)
Peer mentor conducting this session: Julie Sanchez
As an online student, most of your courses will contain an element of teamwork. This Meet-up will give you some strategies for working with a virtual team, and help you navigate the challenges of different time zones, collaborating as a team, and ensuring that the workload is distributed fairly. Learning to be a good team member is an invaluable tool in your librarian toolkit, and it’s a skill you will practice frequently throughout this program.

If you’re feeling daunted by the prospect of flexing your academic writing muscles after time away from the classroom, this may be the session for you! We’ll cover some of the basics, from writing a solid literature review (wait, what’s a literature review??) to the importance of concision (academic writing’s unsung hero), and discuss a host of other tips and tricks in an informal, supportive, student-to-student setting. As an added bonus, the counter-intuitive epiphany that changed my academic writing forever will be revealed! Tune in for a one-hour refresher with time for questions…and reassurance!

8/12/2018; 6:30 PM (PDT)
Peer mentors conducting this session: Michael Cunningham, Valerie Horobik, Salam Salman
You’ve heard of this thing called the E-portfolio, right? Maybe it’s already a source of fear and anxiety. Maybe you prefer the “ignorance is bliss” approach of avoiding it for a couple of years. Take it from us, folks (almost) on the other side of this final hurdle of the MLIS, that you don’t need to panic or hide from it. We’re here to tell you that there is much that can be done now and throughout your time in the program to ease your workload 40 credits from now. Join us for this interactive 45-minute session in which we share our wisdom on course planning, experience and evidence gathering, and avoidance of *face palm* catastrophic data loss. We will introduce you to iSchool planning tools that will become your faithful companions as well as sharing some of our personal strategies for keeping it all straight. Hope to see you there!
