Summer is here, and while it may look different from what we expect, this is an excellent time to get equipped for a fabulous library and information science career. Whether you’re just starting summer classes, getting geared up for the e-Portfolio or about to start classes in the fall, check out this roundup of virtual events and resources below to jump start, or continue to evolve, your experience in the library and information science profession!

Library 2.020: Small, Rural and Independent Libraries

Library 2.0 hosts free, virtual conferences multiple times a year and the next one is coming up on Wednesday, June 17th at 12 p.m. Pacific Time! If you’ve already attended a Library 2.0 event, consider volunteering for one by helping host a breakout session. Debbie Faires can offer more information on that opportunity. Additionally, after you’ve joined Library 2.0, they will send out opportunities to present at an upcoming conference. Imagine what a spectacular Competency O you could write for your e-Portfolio after participating in just one of these options!

Learning Revolution: Reinventing School Weekly Events

Are you interested in teaching online? The Learning Revolution hosts incredible free webinars, including a weekly event on Thursdays at 4 p.m., Eastern Time! On this free, virtual forum educators are rethinking their approach to this mass transition to online learning. Don’t miss Reinventing School

MLIS and MARA Open House Sessions

Attending MLIS and MARA open house sessions, depending on which program you are enrolled in, offer excellent opportunities to reacquaint yourself with the options and resources available to you in the program. It’s also a great way to get connected with current and incoming students! MLIS Online Open House is coming up on July 9th at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time and the MARA Online Open House follows on July 15th at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

ACRL Together Wherever Free Virtual Event

The Association of College and Research Libraries put together a fantastic week of free learning, networking and relaxing with fellow information professionals during their Together Wherever event! From Monday June 8th to Friday June 12th tune in and learn from others who are just as passionate about the library and information profession as you are. While in-person conferences are canceled, it doesn’t mean we can’t connect and learn from one another. See you there!

ALA Virtual Conference

ALA Virtual Community Through Connection June 24th through June 26th is only $60 and offers three days of events including:

  • COVID-19 information for libraries
  • live chats with authors
  • live-streamed presentations
  • a virtual Exhibit Hall
  • Social activities

If that doesn’t pique your interest, the one and only Natalie Portman will deliver the closing address!

Summer and Fall Class Resources

Did your summer classes start and you forgot to look up your textbooks? Or are you considering fall classes and not sure what to take? Whichever the case, the SJSU iSchool Curriculum Center curated by Dr. Linda Main is an excellent resource to review.

Get Involved with Student Groups

While there’s a lull in student group sponsored events, this is an excellent time to follow the student groups on social media and decide which one to get involved in this upcoming semester! There’re multiple options, including:

I hope at least a few of these give you some excitement for the coming summer months as we continue to stay safe at home. If I’ve missed any upcoming opportunities, please feel free to mention them in the chat!
