Gratitude in the iSchool Community: What We’re Thankful For
Published: November 25, 2024 by Gabe Farmer
As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a perfect time to reflect on what we’re thankful for. In the iSchool, we’re more than just a group of students, faculty and staff scattered across the globe. We’re a community! Whether it’s the program’s flexibility, our inspiring peers and faculty or the connections we’ve built, there’s a lot to be grateful for. I reached out to fellow students to hear what they’re thankful for, and their responses highlight the incredible strength and support within our community.
Flexibility and Support
One of the most appreciated aspects students mentioned about the iSchool is its flexibility. For those juggling jobs, families and other responsibilities, the ability to study on your own schedule is vital.
“I’m grateful for the flexibility of the iSchool course work, as well as the quick response time from the advising team,” shared Ashley West. “Everyone at the iSchool is very accommodating and understanding.”
Similarly, Lindsay Mahowald noted, “I am thankful for the flexibility I have in the iSchool, both in what I can study and when I can complete assignments.”
For many, this flexibility has been key to successfully balancing life and school. While some of us use the flexibility to bide our time, others use it to stay ahead of schedule.
One MLIS Discord user wrote “[I] completed ePort before deadline, [I’m] eligible to graduate next month [and] the student group I’m a member of won student chapter of the year[...] Woohoo!!”
Whether we’re blazing through classes at breakneck speed or pacing ourselves to balance life’s demands, we all benefit from the iSchool’s asynchronous nature.
As Lindsay mentioned, flexibility goes beyond pacing; it also gives us the freedom to explore diverse interests. Maximo Arias shared, “I am thankful to the iSchool Community for allowing me to explore my interests in librarianship, graphic design, video editing, artificial intelligence and virtual reality within an academic setting.” This flexibility, paired with inspiration from remarkable staff and supportive fellow students, has created an environment where connections thrive. “The iSchool environment has enabled me to network and connect with new individuals from across the country,” he added.
Connection and Collaboration
Despite being an online program, the iSchool fosters a strong sense of connection. Whether it’s through student organizations or informal chats, the opportunities to collaborate and build relationships are endless.
“I’m thankful for the SJSU SAASC (Society of American Archivists Student Chapter),” said Mary Needham. “Their events are always so informative and relevant. I also love the SJSU MLIS Discord channel. It’s a great place to find classmates, ask questions, get advice, work on projects, share memes and just chat.”
Shannon Brockhurst echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the value of student groups: “I have made many connections through being involved in student groups like SAASC and SLASC and in a graduate assistant team. Engaging with people has been a great way to make online schooling less isolating and make our work feel more real!”
Alexis Johnson finds community and connection through SJSU iSchool Facebook groups. “The crowd-sourced experiences and advice there have helped me navigate which courses best match my goals, and the support there has brought a feeling of “togetherness” to my overall online degree experience.”
You don’t need to be an active member of a student group to find peer support, though. Kevin Mockrin highlighted the importance of peer support from fellow students in his workplace: “I’m mostly thankful for people like you and Corinne who offer advice and help us get through.”
When the times get tough, it is always great to know you have a cohort of supportive and encouraging peers fighting the battle right alongside you. Additionally, with the iSchool’s flexibility, the greatest part is that you can have that support while also still being at home surrounded by friends and family! As one MLIS Discord user said, “I am thankful for family, friends and classmates who have been a great support system during tough weeks.”
Inspiring Faculty and Staff
It’s not just students who make the iSchool special. The faculty are equally impactful. Many students expressed gratitude for professors who inspire and guide them.
Ashley West singled out Dr. Michael Stephens, saying, “[His] dedication, creativity and mindfulness toward librarianship are unmatched. He really is the reason I stuck with the program after feeling a bit disconnected.”
Erika Lara highlighted the responsiveness of the iSchool staff, “The iSchool staff has been very helpful in answering my questions throughout my journey!”
The iSchool staff do a great job not only assisting students but also keeping us informed of new opportunities. “[There are] many opportunities that the iSchool emails on a regular basis,” says Genevieve Hammang. “I’ve taken a lot of classes online over the years, but the iSchool is by far the most successful at creating a lasting community.”
The dedication and support of the iSchool faculty and staff not only help students succeed academically but also foster a sense of belonging that makes the program truly exceptional.
Finding Purpose and Making an Impact
For many of us, the iSchool represents more than just academic achievement. It’s a path to making a difference in our communities.
Corinne Shor shared, “I’m thankful to have a job and be studying something with real social and civic power. The program has broadened my perspective on how libraries can serve and reach diverse communities.”
I can personally relate. Working in a public library and pursuing my MLIS, I’m thankful for the chance to contribute to a world in desperate need of freedom of information and media literacy. Every step we take in this program is a step toward empowering others.
A Shared Journey of Gratitude
From flexible coursework to supportive peers and impactful work, the iSchool community has so much to offer. This Thanksgiving, let’s take a moment to appreciate the people, opportunities and experiences that have made our journeys richer.
