More than just a Conference

iStudent Blog

Being awarded the SJSU Travel Grant to attend the California Library Association Conference in Riverside in 2025 removed the financial burden of attending. I attended the 2024 CLA conference in Pasadena, which had some bumps in the road. This time, I was able to reconnect with peers, mentors, and new friends at the conference and engage in an inspiring panel discussion, learn what is working for other libraries, and gather ideas for programming and events. What was cool was that I was able to meet face-to-face with some of the students who attend SJSU, and peers with whom I had classes. This grant allowed me to connect with people who will become lifelong friends and colleagues. iSchool offers different opportunities to build community with our professors and students.

Attending conferences, joining groups, and clubs provides us with a sense of belonging. Another fun activity was attending the cultural and artistic exhibitions offered by the conference. I was able to have a private CLA tour of the Cheech Museum and learn about the Chicano collection of Cheech Marin. I attended an archival demonstration at the Riverside Main Library, which provided a glimpse into Riverside’s history. Attend the Riverside Downtown Arts & Cultural Tour, which includes stories about murals and sculptures. And also attend the Riverside Heritage House Tour, where we were able to view the 1891 Victorian home with some of the original furniture and antiques.

Not only did I engage in meaningful learning and discussion about advocacy, leadership, culture, and self-care, but I also learned about Riverside’s rich history. By attending the conference, I had a professional and personal enriching experience, thanks to the SJSU travel grant, which granted me an invaluable opportunity to attend the 2025 CLA Conference.

Thank you, J. Crystal Contreras
