Each spring, the MARA program offers MARA 210 – Records Creation, Appraisal and Retention. In this course, students learn about the processes of creation and appraisal and design a records retention plan.
The assignment is excellent practice for one of the foundational documents in any records management program. But great RIM resources also exist outside of the MARA program. In April 2016, Carmel Curtis, a National Digital Stewardship resident, released A Beginner’s Guide to Record Retention on the LOC blog. Her post introduces some of the key concepts of records retention and outlines the steps of creating a records retention schedule.
