Students enrolled in the Master of Archives and Records Administration program at the San José State University School of Information have a new course offering on the spring 2023 schedule. MARA 284 Data Governance: An Introduction introduces the fundamentals of data governance from a records and information management perspective.

Dr. Darra Hofman, MARA program coordinator, states that the course “reflects an important need in RIM, and we’re delighted to be able to offer our students this opportunity to gain cutting edge skills and knowledge.”

Students will learn from lecturer Susan Marin, who is also a member of the Master of Archives and Records Administration Program Advisory Committee for the SJSU School of Information. Marin brings her expertise in corporate information management at one of the largest regional banks in the country to her online instruction.

Marin says she recommends this course to students who are interested in learning more about the fundamentals of records and information management. “Since data/information is the core of a records/information management program, understanding the fundamentals are vital to a successful program.”

The course will be conducted completely online in the Canvas Learning Management System and cover a variety of topics, such as data ethics, storage and operations, data security, business intelligence, metadata management, and big data. Students will complete a final project consisting of a presentation to their simulated client with the data governance problem statement and proposed solution.

The prerequisites for the course are the completion of MARA 200 and MARA 204 for all MARA students. The prerequisites are waived for non-MARA majors. The three-unit course supports program learning outcomes C, D, E, G and J; four out of 10 MARA Program Learning Outcomes.

Registration for the spring 2023 semester is open from November 1, 2022 through January 22, 2023. The first day of instruction is January 25, 2023.
