The premiere issue of Archeota, the e-newsletter created by the Society of American Archivists Student Chapter (SAASC) at the San José State University (SJSU) School of Information, has hit the virtual newsstands. The inaugural issue of Archeota introduces the student chapter officers, provides highlights of recent chapter events, and discusses a number of issues relevant to archivists.

Managing editor and Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA) student Catherine Folnovic, said that the newsletter was “truly a cooperative effort” and stated that she is grateful for the assistance of everyone involved with its publication. “It was a pleasure working as the managing editor,” noted Folnovic, “and I am really proud of what we have created together.”

According to Folnovic, the idea for the newsletter came from a desire for connection with student chapter members and for discussion of key topics in the archival field. “From the very beginning,” she explained, “Archeota was all about engaging with our membership and developing a platform for profiling our current officers, promoting activities and events, talking about the archival field, creating thought-provoking original content, and learning from each other’s experiences.”

SAASC faculty advisor Lori Lindberg (@msarchive) shared her enthusiasm for the newsletter via a succession of tweets. On April 28, she tweeted, “Ooh! @sjsuslis_saasc is about to publish the inaugural issue of Archeota, their #SAA Student Chapter newsletter! #archives @SJSUiSchool.” A few days later, she sent a tweet with link to the newly published newsletter.

The spring 2015 issue of Archeota is available to download now; another issue of the biannual newsletter will be published in fall 2015. A call for content for the newsletter will be issued at the beginning of the fall semester via Canvas, Twitter, Facebook, the SAASC blog, and other channels. Additional information about submission guidelines is available on the SAASC website.
