Director of Cataloguing and Reference Services
Historical Society of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA
What I am doing now.
As the Director of Cataloguing and Reference Services at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP), I manage all of the printed material that comes through the library via cataloging, catalog maintenance and collection development. I also manage our reference department by facilitating in-person and virtual reference workflows, working with colleagues to establish or update subject guides, reference training, and ensuring access to physical and digital resources. Moreover, I manage the Society’s remote research service, Research by Mail. This service provides remote patrons an opportunity to generate requests related to historical or genealogical research.
What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?
I currently use everything I gained from my time at the iSchool. Much of my track focused on reference, collection development and metadata. All three of these areas are what I practice on a daily basis and have become instrumental in executing the multitude of projects I have engaged in. For instance, my role in our recent migration of bibliographic records to a new ILS would not have been possible without understanding the practice of cataloging.
