Q. Who is eligible to take Coursera courses?
A. Coursera courses will be made available to current students enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science, Master of Archives and Records Administration, Master of Science in Informatics, Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Data Analytics, and Gateway PhD programs. A limited number of licenses will also be reserved for alumni of these programs.

Q. How do I sign up for Coursera courses through iSchool?
A. At the beginning of each semester, the iSchool will send an email to current students with instructions on how to sign up for the Coursera courses. The email will be sent to the students’ email address on file. The iSchool will also contact alumni.

Q. Is there an extra cost to take a course through Coursera?
A. No, the iSchool has partnered with Coursera to offer the Coursera Career Academy free-of-charge to students and alumni.

Q. When does the Coursera license expire?
A. The Coursera courses will be made available to students who have an active SJSU.edu email address. The SJSU.edu email address is valid for one year after graduation. Alumni will be given a one-year license, and their Coursera account will expire automatically at the end of the one-year period.

Q. How soon after I am admitted to an iSchool program will I be able to get my access to Coursera?
A. This is an opt-in process. The opt-in form will be sent out at the beginning of each semester. The form will require an SJSU.edu email address to sign up.

Q. Will I still have access if I am on a semester leave or Leave of Absence?
A. Yes, as long as your SJSU.edu email address is active.

Q. If I was a former student and used to have iSchool access to Coursera, will I be able to have access again to the same material I was working toward when I reapply for admission and am again matriculating?
A. Only if your SJSU.edu email address is still active.

Q. Do students enrolled in the Open Classes, Digital Assets Certificate or Post-Master’s Certificate program have the same access to the license?
A. No, the Coursera courses are not available to students in the Open Classes or Certificate programs.

Q. Can I use earned Coursera pieces (e.g., certificates, classes, portions of certificates, and portions of classes) as artifacts demonstrating any of the competencies for e-Portfolio?
A. Yes, as long as you can relate to the competency per the rubrics.

Q. I’m having technical issues. Who do I contact?
A. For any support issues related to Coursera Career Academy, please submit the iSchool Tech Support Form.

Q. I clicked on the link and created my Coursera account, but I still do not have access to the Coursera Career Academy. What should I do?
A. If for some reason you are not added to the iSchool Coursera Career Academy after creating your Coursera account, please try the following:

  1. Log into your new Coursera account.
  2. Go back to the email that you received from us with the sign-up link.
  3. Click on the sign-up link again.

Although rare, we’re told that students are occasionally needing to do this in order to get joined to the iSchool Coursera Career Academy program.
