MLIS 2025
Librarian II | Library Resources
Mission Viejo Library
Mission Viejo, CA

What I am doing now.

In my current role, I get the opportunity to wear many hats and contribute across several dynamic areas of library service. I oversee acquisitions and actively develop the Spanish and International Languages collection, as well as manage the Multimedia collections. I lead database management and development for both staff and public use, ensuring access and functionality for our community. As a reference librarian, I assist patrons both in-person and virtually, connecting them with the information they need. I also supervise part-time Library Specialists and on-call Librarians, while managing our branch’s tech center in collaboration with dedicated teen and adult volunteers (our Library Technology Specialists). Beyond these responsibilities, I serve as one of four Spanish stipend proctors for onboarding new City employees and as one of two translators for our branch flyers and program materials.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

One of the most valuable things I did during my MLIS program was take advantage of internships, including INFO 298 opportunities. These experiences gave me hands-on exposure to the profession, helped me build real-world skills, and allowed me to grow a strong network of professional connections. Because of those connections, I was flown out to Philadelphia for ALA 2025 and received scholarships to attend the National REFORMA Conference VIII.
Another key piece of advice: if possible, work in a library or information organization while you’re in school. Doing both at the same time not only strengthens your projects (since you can apply classroom concepts directly to your workplace), but it also positions you for faster career growth. Employers notice when you’re actively advancing your education while contributing to the field, and it can open doors to promotions more quickly.
