Dickson Librarian

What I am doing now.

I am the head librarian of the Jean Outland Chrysler Library at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where I have been working since 2008. I manage the library’s 300,000 volumes of books, periodicals, auction catalogs, and archives. My main duties are cataloging and circulating books to the museum’s staff, handle reference requests from staff and the public, research the collection, and maintain the archives. I also get to work on metadata and organization of our digital asset management system with our museum’s photographer.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

I’ve been able to combine my art and art history background with what I learned at SJSU. I had cataloging experience prior to starting this program but I learned the importance of metadata, controlled vocabularies, and database management. I’ve also learned proper reference skills, promotion and outreach skills, and management skills that I did not have before. I know I picked the right career path and the right library school!
