Peer mentors for INFO 203 are conducting optional sessions for new students in the first few weeks of the fall semester. Seats are limited, but the link to a recording will be posted here, as soon as it is available. (Generally 24-48 hours after event.)

Please see the details on this page to learn about each session, and then use the RSVP form linked below to register for a session. If you do not see one of the sessions listed in the RSVP form, it means the session is full and has been closed.

What Am I Doing with My Life? – An Exploration of the MLIS Career Pathways (Monday August 12, 5pm)

Confused about where you’re going in life? There are many different careers that can be obtained with an MLIS, and luckily the SJSU program has specific career pathways that help you succeed in each one. At this meeting, you’ll be taking an informal personality quiz to suggest what you might be interested in, and we’ll be discussing each pathway afterwards. There’s a lot more to library science than just public libraries!

Don’t Have Library Experience? – How To Succeed as an MLIS Student Without It (Monday August 12, 6pm)

Have you come into the MLIS program with little or no prior library experience? Hear tips and tricks from three peer mentors from similar backgrounds for how to make the most of your experience here at SJSU.

Unique Libraries & Information Centers (Monday August 12, 7pm)

Join us for a short virtual exploration of libraries and information centers around the world! Share your dream library and information center destinations and learn about unique library features from different cultures. Let’s inspire each other to discover the world, one library at a time. We’ll also share tips, tricks and advice from current students to incoming MLIS students.

Staying on Track: Online Learning Experiences (Tuesday August 13, 6:30pm)

If you are new to online learning, and you want some tips and tricks from people who used to be in your shoes, come on by! We will share our tips, tricks, and strategies to navigating a new learning experience, and help make it more manageable for those of you who are new to the concept.

Passport to World Libraries (Wednesday August 14, 6pm)

Join us on a captivating journey to some extraordinary libraries from around the world! This INFO 203 Meet Up celebrates libraries as dynamic spaces that transcend borders and connect us through the universal language of learning. We will highlight international libraries through engaging visuals, fascinating anecdotes, and interactive activities while also honing in on a few technical skills needed in iSchool. Prepare to be inspired by libraries from around the globe that come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, are pioneering innovative services, and are changing how we see libraries in the 21st century.

You’ve Just Been Accepted – Now What: A Q + A on the MLIS Program at SJSU and Book Trivia! (Thursday August 15, 5:30pm)

Congratulations! You’ve just been accepted in the MLIS program at San Jose State University and other than the four core classes you have to take (ahem, INFo 203), you don’t really know what to do next or you’re wondering what else can you do or you’re just overwhelmed with all this information overload. So throw your questions, thoughts, or even rants at us and we will answer your whims with our knowledge and experience. And once you feel at ease with the program, we have a fun book trivia for you to play!

iSchool Survival Guide (Friday August 16, 2:30pm)

If you’re feeling confused and overwhelmed about what E-Portfolio even is, this is the place for you! Join us for a discussion about how to get started, popular resources and tools for notetaking, scheduling, and time-management as well as the student communities you can join for extra support.

MLIS Jeopardy Game: What is.. a successful iSchool student? (Tuesday August 20, 6pm)

A fun and interactive jeopardy game to help new MLIS students understand what they’re getting into, navigate picking courses, knowing who to go to, and how to make the most of their time in the MLIS program. At the end of our time together, you will come away with some helpful tools, advice, and hopefully a funny story or two.

Kick off the new semester with our relaxing and insightful Zoom meetup designed to help you find balance between school and life! Join us for “Crafting Balance: School, Life, and Creativity,” where we’ll discuss effective strategies for managing your time, reducing stress, and incorporating creative activities into your routine. Bring your knitting, crochet, or any creative project you enjoy to this meetup. Let’s craft a balanced and successful semester together!

How to fill up your shelf with banned books 101 (Wednesday August 28, 6:30pm)

Have you ever dreamed of a space where you can share a bit about your favorite banned book? You found it! This is a warm and cozy gathering where we can share stories and recommendation of great banned novels your read and explore together what makes a banned book banned after all. Everybody is welcomed!
