Peer mentors for INFO 203 are conducting optional sessions for new students in the first few weeks of the spring semester. Seats are limited, but the link to a recording will be posted here, as soon as it is available. (Generally 24-48 hours after event.)

Please see the details on this page to learn about each session, and then use the RSVP form linked below to register for a session. If you do not see one of the sessions listed in the RSVP form, it means the session is full and has been closed.

Our crazy lives: How to incorporate iSchool into everything else. (Monday January 16, 6:30pm Pacific)

Has anyone ever asked you how you do it all? Are you adding a graduate degree to an already busy, hectic schedule? That’s OK! Join this session to talk with peer mentors Linnea and Leanna about how to balance life, iSchool, and everything else. We will share time management, homework, and class selection tips that will help keep you on track and on the road to success. See you on Monday, January 16th at 6:30PM Pacific time!

Helpful tips for your Eportfolio. (Wednesday January 18, 6:30pm Pacific)

Congratulations on starting your MLIS program! So why are we already talking about the e-portfolio? The Eportfolio is the culminating project for the MLIS program. It seems like a scary and monstrous project, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We are here to give you some tips, tricks, and simple steps that will help you as you progress through the MLIS program. Share a fun evening meeting new people and asking all the Eportfolio questions you want. We’re here to help!

Setting up your LinkedIn page and tips for LinkedIn Learning.  (Thursday January 19, 6:00pm Pacific)

So, you have already enrolled in an MLIS program and started your first class but now you realized you don’t know anyone in the program and maybe feel a little isolated. Come check out this workshop where we will talk about setting up your LinkedIn account so you are prepared for any networking opportunities with SJSU. We will discuss tips for customizing your profile, practice sending out connection requests, and even spend some time looking at the amazing benefits of LinkedInLearning. Come learn with us, Thursday, January 19th at 6:00 PM Pacific Time and I guarantee by the end of the course you will walk away with at least one new person in your networking circle!

How to Reduce Anxiety and Prevent Overwhelm. (Thursday January 19, 6:30pm Pacific)

It’s easy to get overwhelmed in graduate school – especially when all of your courses are online. In this meetup we’ll help you identify areas that may be particularly overwhelming, share effective tools for reducing course-related anxiety, and let you know what to do when you need help. Planning for those stressful times in advance is the best way to keep from drowning!

Student Jobs, Clubs, and More: Getting Involved at the iSchool. (Friday January 20, 6:00pm Pacific)

Getting Involved: Student Organizations, Student Assistantships, and More. When you join the iSchool you’ll start getting emails with unique and interesting opportunities all the time. How do you know which ones to pick? Come and learn about some of the many student organizations, as well as how to apply for student assistantships and scholarships, and how to make connections with other SJSU students in class and online.

Presenting Without Fear: A Guide to Preparing for Successful Presentations. (Saturday January 21, 12:00pm Pacific)

Do you fear public speaking? You are not alone! Presenting is an important part of many courses in the iSchool, and is a requirement for many jobs in the library and information science field. Familiarize yourself with some strategies and tips for engaging your audience, avoiding mistakes, and presenting successfully without fear.

A Guide to the iSchool Career Pathways.  (Sunday January 22, 12:00pm Pacific)

So you’re enrolled and starting your first semester in your MLIS graduate program. Wondering what electives to take in future semesters? Curious as to what sort of jobs you can have after graduation? There’s no limit to the possibilities, however, first one needs to build foundational knowledge for their future career. Come learn about the Career Pathways with suggested courses that are offered at the iSchool and begin charting your pathway now.

Back to School: Thriving as a Nontraditional Student. (Sunday January 22, 5:00pm Pacific)

Are you returning to school after some time away? So did we! We’ll share our experiences relearning how to be students in this new online environment, overcoming anxiety, and balancing school with work, families, and other commitments. Come meet your peers who are in the same boat and start to turn those nerves into excitement!

What to Take Next? Tips for Choosing Your Classes. (Tuesday January 24, 6:00pm Pacific)

Are you wondering what classes to take next? Not sure what order to take them in or how to find out more? Join us for some tips! We’ll look at required classes and elective classes, and introduce you to a variety of resources to help you evaluate them. We’ll give you some big picture tips, including tips on pathways and planning several semesters out, as well as some class comparison tips, including looking at schedules and syllabi. Come with your questions and we’ll do our best to answer them!
