Peer mentors for INFO 203 are conducting optional sessions for new students right before the start of the new semester. Seats are limited, but the link to a recording will be posted here, as soon as it is available. (Generally 24-48 hours after event.)
Please see the details on this page to learn about each session, and then use the RSVP form linked below to register for a session. If you do not see one of the sessions listed in the RSVP form, it means the session is full and has been closed.

Sip and Survive: Part One (Saturday January 10th, 9am)
Join us with a cup of your favorite warm beverage, make connections with classmates, and discover some mini-hacks that will make your life calmer throughout your MLIS program. In this session, participants will learn useful ideas to manage the technological side of being an online student. We will offer thoughts on using citation managers, juggling devices, pre-semester preparation, managing teamwork, and so much more.

Work Smarter, Not Harder: A Guide to Digital Organization (Sunday January 11th, 10:30am)
Overwhelmed by a new online learning environment? Worried about staying organized, keeping up to date with assignments, or planning for the ePortfolio? This session will guide you through digital file management techniques and help you develop digital organization habits for the long term, using software available to SJSU students at no cost.

Reasonable Expectations: Setting Your Own Pace and Finding Balance (Monday January 12th, 6:30pm)
Starting out on your MLIS program is both exciting and daunting: there’s so much to prepare for and absorb at once! We’ve all been there before. When starting out, it’s easy to get overwhelmed when faced with this new program. This meet up will cover the best way to set a good pace for yourself when starting your MLIS program. We’ll discuss utilizing your Tracker Planner, taking advantage of internships or opportunities offered by the School of Information, how to find them, and managing expectations when it comes to planning out your journey.

Beyond Classes: Getting Involved During Your Time in the iSchool (Tuesday January 13th, 5:30pm)
Interested in learning more about student groups and student leadership? Looking for more opportunities to get involved, connect, and network with fellow students beyond the classroom? Join Cat and Diane for an interactive info session on all the student groups available to you at the iSchool, how and when to join, and paths to leadership within the student groups. And don’t sleep on internships and conferences!

In this session, participants will explore how to authentically balance work, family, and school obligations through careful course planning, life scheduling, prioritizing, managing expectations, finding support from family and community and through the iSchool.

The ePortfolio Explained: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Prepare (Saturday January 17, 11am)
Feeling curious (or a little nervous) about the MLIS ePortfolio? You’re not alone. This low-key, peer-led meet-up will walk through what the ePortfolio actually is, how core competencies connect to your classes, and some simple ways to stay organized so future-you is grateful. We’ll share tips, resources, and lessons learned, with interactive moments and lots of space for questions—no prior knowledge required, just come as you are.

Plot Twist! Crafting Your Own MLIS Career Story (Saturday January 17, 3pm)
Not seeing yourself in one of the standard MLIS pathways? In this interactive session, three peer mentors will share their own journeys through the MLIS program, from technical system paths to niche librarianship options like art or music to digital preservation. We will talk about how to use career pathways and core competencies as tools (not boxes), help you brainstorm your own customized direction, and give you space to connect with fellow students who are also figuring it out. You’ll leave with tools, ideas, and the reminder that your path is yours to build.

Fibiana’s Declassified School Survival Guide (Monday January 19th, 7pm)
It’s no mystery that starting a masters program can seem a bit scary but with the right tools it doesn’t have to feel so daunting. Join me in learning some helpful resources that has helped me balance family, work, and school. This session will cover studying tips, how to place boundaries for those around you and for yourself. We will also cover breathing techniques and self care because in order to have and maintain balance you must take care of yourself.
