AI Chatbots in Public Libraries
Patricia Duarte, 2025 Showcase
AI Chatbots in Public Libraries: This project was created through my Inspiration Report assignment in INFO 287: The Hyperlinked Library. The report invited me to explore a technology that could influence the future of library services and to examine how AI chatbots can extend the reach of public library services. It focuses on how libraries can use chatbots to answer questions, guide users, and provide help when staff are not available. This project highlights opportunities and challenges in integrating AI into library operations while also encouraging thoughtful implementation that maintains a balance between technological innovation and human-centered service. Patricia Duarte: “I was drawn to librarianship because I see public libraries as places where people can learn and grow together. Working for public libraries has also helped me understand how important it is for communities to have access to these spaces for support. In my INFO 287 The Hyperlinked Library course with Dr. Michael Stephens, I created a project on AI chatbots in public libraries to explore how technology can improve service and communication. I studied examples such as KingbotGPT from SJSU Library, which assists students after hours by answering questions and providing resources. Projects like this show how libraries can use innovation to meet the needs of their communities. I hope to continue developing ideas that make information easier to reach and that help people feel more supported each time they visit the library.”
