AI Reskilling Project and Reflections
Gabe Farmer, 2024 Showcase
AI Reskilling Project and Reflections: In this project, I attempted to use AI, specifically ChatGPT 4, to streamline the process of tracking interactions at library reference desks. My initial skepticism towards AI evolved into a recognition of its potential, especially in enhancing efficiency within library services. The project aimed to replace the manual, pen-and-paper method of tracking reference desk interactions with a cloud-based spreadsheet system created and analyzed by ChatGPT. Despite encountering challenges with formatting and date tracking, I successfully developed a spreadsheet that both users and ChatGPT could interpret. This approach not only simplifies data collection but also provides quick, comprehensible summaries and analyses, saving significant time and effort. The project underscores the importance of AI reskilling for library professionals to remain relevant and efficient in an evolving technological landscape. While the implementation had its difficulties, the proof of concept demonstrated here offers a promising blueprint for future integration of AI in library workflows.
Gabe Farmer (he/him) graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media Studies a decade ago and began working in the film and media industry in Nashville. When COVID hit, he pivoted to being a personal trainer, where he spent several years of his career. Recently, Gabe decided to make a new career shift into public librarianship, and he couldn’t be happier about that choice. He began working in the Burbank Public Library system in April 2024 as a page and hopes to accept a role as an associate soon.
In the spring of 2024, Gabe started his MLIS degree, eager to grow and learn in his new field. In early 2022, he moved from Nashville, TN to Los Angeles with his wife, their two cats, and their Rottweiler. They are loving their new home in the valley.
