An Exploration of Youth Literature as a Means of Developing Empathy

An Exploration of Youth Literature as a Means of Developing Empathy: The topic of developing empathy in youth in today’s society is critical to humanity. The power of literature to help develop compassion, kindness, and understanding towards one another is explored from its earliest beginning to today’s works. This paper weaves current research on the importance of developing empathy with books ranging from picture books, juvenile fiction, juvenile graphic novels, juvenile non-fiction, young adult, and young adult graphic novels to understand a progression throughout history of these materials as a means of developing empathy in youth.

Joelle Block: “As I quickly am approaching 50, my desire to obtain a MLIS degree has led me to SJSU. I am so grateful for the opportunity this program offers especially for those who have found their love of libraries later in life. I am looking forward to spending the later part of my career working with children and families as they discover all the wonderful services the library offers.”
