Information Seeking and Needs of Parents of Trans Youth

Information Seeking and Needs of Parents of Trans Youth: Parents of trans youth comprise an information community with the complex query of how best to support their trans child. Their information seeking requires the use of a variety of sources, from firsthand knowledge from trans people to medical research. The berrypicking model of information seeking and associated theories of browsing are used to frame the information seeking of this community as they navigate learning about transness as an identity and understanding the medical options available to their child. This information community often finds their information online and prefers information that comes directly from the experiences of trans people or from authoritative medical professionals and organizations. They often find this information online through blogs and forums. Opportunities for library programming are recommended to best serve this community. Understanding this community’s information seeking behavior will better prepare libraries to provide them with the right sources needed to support their trans children.
