LA Public Library AI Integration: Roadmap to Success

LA Public Library AI Integration: Roadmap to Success: This website presents a comprehensive change management strategy for integrating artificial intelligence technologies into the Los Angeles Public Library’s main branch. Drawing from established change management theories and inspired by the Urban Libraries Council Innovation awards, our team provides a detailed roadmap for library leadership to transform services, operations, and community connections through AI adoption. The roadmap outlines critical priorities, anticipated challenges, and strategic approaches across the first year of implementation—from initial stakeholder engagement and vision development to full-scale AI service deployment and community digital literacy initiatives. Our recommendations emphasize ethical AI implementation, staff empowerment, and community-centered design principles that align with LAPL’s mission to serve Los Angeles’s diverse communities. The project includes multimedia elements demonstrating key concepts and implementation strategies, showcasing how AI can enhance rather than replace the human-centered approach to library services while positioning LAPL at the forefront of library innovation in the digital age.

Karina Dominguez was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, faced numerous challenges, yet those experiences shaped their resilience and determination. As the eldest of four siblings in a low-income Hispanic family, she took on the responsibility of being a role model and striving for academic success. With support from teachers, mentors, the community, and her parents, Karina overcame these obstacles and developed a passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion. The local public library became a pivotal part of her journey, offering resources that enabled academic success and inspiring her to give back through volunteering.

Karina received her BA in Sociology and Psychology from UCI. She is now in her second year of the MLIS program at San Jose State University. Currently working at the Los Angeles Public Library and Read to a Child, Karina has gained invaluable experience that is helping her achieve her goal of becoming a librarian. Although she is open to working in any field of the library, Karina is aiming to work as a children’s librarian due to her experience working at an elementary school. All these opportunities solidified her desire to pursue a career in librarianship, where she can expand her community impact and provide the same support that shaped her life.
