Learning about Homelessness with Children’s Picture Books

Learning about Homelessness with Children’s Picture Books: Picture books aren’t just for early reading or storytime. They’re essential and accessible when it comes to challenging issues that are viewed as controversial or topics that people assume one should know about, but do not. Homelessness triggers a lot of emotions and is often misunderstood. The combination of visual and narrative is a welcome approach to learning about homelessness. I hope the presence of a Homeless project in the student showcase raises awareness. Homelessness is a community issue, and one where public librarians can make a difference. Alva Fong: “It’s an honor to be selected for the 2025 Exemplary Student Showcase. Many thanks to Professor Kimberli Buckley for her guidance and encouragement on this project. I want to give a special thanks to my rescue mutts, Zero and Waffles, who have accompanied me through every step of this program.”
