National Deaf History Month: Deaf Representation in Literature
iSchool Presents Free Online EDI Symposium May 5
Published: May 5, 2025 by Matsuko Friedland
Please join the SJSU iSchool in celebrating National Deaf History Month 2025 as we honor the achievements of our d/Deaf and hard of hearing community members.
Established in 1880, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was shaped by Deaf leaders who believed in the right of the American Deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and to have its interests represented at the national level. While National Deaf History Month (NDHM) was initiated in 1997 and previously recognized from March 13 through April 15, as of 2020 the NAD Board now recognizes April 1-30 as NDHM in an effort to dismantle racism within the community and ensure that the historical lens includes the experiences of BIPOC Deaf People (source: nad.org).
Join us on Monday, May 5, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pacific Time, for our free online symposium, “National Deaf History Month: Deaf Representation in Literature”, featuring a presentation from Evelyn Keolian, Children’s Librarian at Chicago Public Library, Founder and Co-chair of the CPL Diversability Advocacy Committee, and Adjunct Professor of American Sign Language at Oakton College, followed by a panel discussion with Alicia Deal, Mondo Vaden, MC Brickell, Katie Albright, and KayCee Choi.
