Plans to build a $155 million, state-of-the-art archives facility on the UDC campus have been shelved due to budget pressure from a projected $1 billion revenue shortfall. Instead, historic records will be relocated to the Charles Sumner School Archives, and a separate storage facility may be constructed off-site. The original archives building has been at capacity for over 20 years, with valuable items like presidential wills and vital records now stored across multiple locations. The shift reflects a pragmatic pivot toward financial sustainability while raising concerns about long-term access and preservation.
