Published by Andrew Wiegert, August 22nd, 2025
The National Archives in Washington, D.C. has launched “Opening
the Vault,” a rotating exhibition series spotlighting some of the
nation’s most significant historical artifacts—many not seen in
public for years. The inaugural rotation (on display from May 7
through August 6, 2025) features extraordinary items such as:
– George Washington’s signed 1778 Oath of Allegiance and
Revolutionary War expense book
– Benjamin Franklin’s 1775 postal ledger and table of postal
rates
This program celebrates the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army
and Postal Service while bringing foundational documents out of
storage and into public view—making history tangible for all.
